(LAX) -- Too bad you have to order new passenger jets several years in advance.

That's what the folks at Qantas Airways must be thinking. They're now flying the massive and expensive Airbus A380 to LAX from Australia. And they're doing it when the global economy is in the tank. People aren't travelling as much or spending as much for business or pleasure as they once did.

The timing is terrible.

At least the new jet will save some money on fuel. It's more efficient than a 747 and carries more people, too. That may be the only saving grace.

The double-decker A380 landed here from Melbourne this morning on its inaugural commercial flight. (How big is the demand for seats between Melbourne and LAX, I wonder).

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John (Australia's most famous export) were on hand for the festivities. Seeing them was the highlight for me. Olivia looks the same after all these years.

The flight was sold out. Coach tickets cost $1100 roundtrip. Or you could book the luxury suite, with a double bed, for $27,655 per passenger
